My Lakota name is Napȟešniwin, or “Woman Not Afraid of the Enemy.” I am an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and I was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. Being the granddaughter of Lakota Law co-founder Madonna Thunder Hawk, I knew as a child that I would have big shoes to fill. I spent my younger years planning how I would contribute to the “Red Power” Movement that my Unci (grandmother) joined during the 1960s.I realized early on that our battle for Indigenous justice and sovereignty can only be won through enlightening the minds of our people — so I took my academic training seriously, getting my BA and MLS degrees in Indigenous Law. As a wise person once said, “The most dangerous Native is an educated Native.” Right out of school, I worked at the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s Public Defender’s office and then served four years as the Director of Community Engagement for Thunder Valley CDC, a nonprofit based at Pine Ridge that focuses on community development and liberation of the Oceti Sakowin — our Great Sioux Nation. 

Being raised partly by my Unci, as a child I was exposed constantly to the stories of the American Indian Movement, our people’s defiance of colonization, and its effects on our communities. This history has been my call to action. It is paramount that we understand: the issues have not changed, only the particular individuals facing the trauma caused by colonization and the activists taking up the torch to heal that trauma are new.

As I enter into work this year with Lakota Law on voting rights, oil pipeline resistance, and other crucial issues facing my people, I feel a real sense of responsibility to carry on the legacy of my elders. I’m grateful that you are there to help me in this mission. Living in the digital age, all of us can now communicate in immensely powerful ways.
