A relevant local news presentation called “Around the Tiers” broadcast a story about dogs against domestic violence sanctuary, because the link between abuse of animals and people is becoming more understood.

The connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty is so significant that it is commonly referred to simply as “the Link.” Perpetrators of domestic violence often threaten harm or bring actual harm to their victims’ pets in order to control them, keep victims from leaving, or to punish them for actually leaving or attempting to leave. Concern over the safety of pets often delays domestic violence victims from seeking help, causes them to return to their abuser, or prevents them from seeking assistance entirely.

This brings to mind the danger that is perhaps overshadowed by the thoroughly critical topic of banned abortions being imposed by patriarchy in violation of the human rights of half of the population called women. 

One grew up during the restricted both in FACT and emotionally, of rights of women.  Abortion has been prominent in the news and in the minds of young women.  As one who for over 25 years has warned youngsters that due to their complacency and arrogance, control over their own body would come to an end at the behest of patriarchy.  That time has arrived.  But there is an even more hideous violation of human rights against women that so far has been unmentionable and buried in time.  Some women lived those times who are alive today and able to again try to warn young women of that which they are about to lose.

That violation is rejection of no-fault divorce.

One obtained divorce in NYS pre-no-fault divorce.  The reason was that the waiting period of 1-year pre-divorce waiting period was unacceptable due to the violence of the domestic upheaval that instilled the fear of death in one.  So here was the process to obtain a divorce in the early ’70’s.

One needed to testify to the harm committed physically, along with a witness who was aware of said harm.  The marks on one’s body had been witnessed by a friend, or at court one wouldn’t have had the information available.

Next NYS mandated joint counseling between victim and perpetrator.  We were informed that the point wasn’t compatibility, the point was to keep the marriage intact; regardless of domestic violence.

One had an order of protection.  This is nothing but a piece of paper and did nothing in actual protection.  One had been told by the Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies that domestic violence was “a personal matter”, and they refused to arrest the perpetrator.

In an effort toward safety, the counselor held the perpetrator, after each session, for 20 minutes to let the victim race home and lock her door.

This is the reason one appreciates the power of no-fault divorces that provides for divorce when living together has become dangerous.

We still in the Southern Tier of NYS experience far too many domestic violence incidences as it is.

The Trump candidacy seems to be on a mission of violation of human rights for women on many levels.  But then the Democratic Base used language quite misogynistic during their 2020 campaign,,,,,especially against white women.  Use of misogyny in a Presidential campaign is cynical and mean.

Regardless of skin color, misogyny is misogyny and is a violation of human rights of women.

Fearless women are appreciated.

A word to the wise, ladies, you have more to lose than you imagine.  A ban on abortion was recently unimaginable.  Naivete is sweet but feckless.
