BUREAUCRATI OVERREACH OR DICTATORSHIP?

BUREAUCRATIC OVERREACH OR DICTATORSHIP?

An ongoing concern for some people is the collaboration between lawmakers and law enforcement.

https://www.wbng.com/2024/01/25/mike-sigler-launches-campaign-state-senate/  – Sigler is running in the 52nd district, which encompasses most of Broome County and all of Cortland and Tompkins counties. The seat is currently held by Democrat Lea Webb, who narrowly won with a 51-49 margin in one of the state’s closest races in 2022. Sigler was endorsed tonight by Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar.

One remembers in the treasure trove of memories, retired Broome County, NY Sheriff Harder saying that if someone wanted to be a lawmaker, she/he should run for the office.  The implication seemed to be the different functions of these 2 positions should be separate.

Sheriff Harder then went on to endorse his Deputy Sheriff Akshar for the position of NYS Senator, which was a successful run.  So Current Sheriff Akshar, now no longer a lawmaker, had the opportunity to put into place the laws under which NYS citizens must labor.  NYS-then-Senator Akshar jumped back to run for Broome County, NY Sheriff upon the retirement of Sheriff Harder.  He now enforces the laws he helped enact.

Curiously Sheriff Harder then endorsed the opponent of current-Sheriff Akshar.  Chaos may be the name of the game.  Anywhoo……

Broome County, NY and environs now have the services of NYS Senator Lea Webb, who seems active and involved in her responsibilities.

But Sheriff Akshar, apparently unsatisfied with his position in law enforcement, is active in endorsements.  After endorsing into a successful Broome County, NY DA Batisti, Sheriff Akshar is endorsing for NYS Senator Sigler.  Reports suggest not only a crony-ship between Batisti and Akshar, but actual bureaucratic actions against a member of the public, in times past.

The Southern Tier of NYS is rife with domestic violence.  An ‘ole-boy network isn’t helpful to those with less power.

Akshar, who was at the time involved in Broome County Sheriff David Harder’s re-election campaign, “was willing to join this plot” so Battisti, who was chairman of the Broome County Independence Party, would arrange for the party’s endorsement of Harder, according to the lawsuit filed by Binghamton attorney Ronald Benjamin.

Millus, in court papers arguing to have the lawsuit dismissed, said it “attempts to convert a common domestic relations dispute into a civil rights action,” but there is no evidence of any abuse of law enforcement or political influence in this case.

“Conspiracy theorists can find conspiracies under any set of circumstances,” Millus said in court papers. “But there is no proof of a conspiracy here, any more than there is proof that the first moon landing was a hoax.”

None of this seems illegal, only questionable.  Citizens have the right to consider what surely can be called bureaucratic overreach.  One suggests this includes a crony-ready bureaucracy running government.

During the special meeting Friday, Council Member Robert Cavanaugh said the city charter allows the council to fill all vacancies, whether due to retirement, resignation or a failure to elect.

“This law has been in place since at least 1970, 53 years,” Cavanaugh said. “The mayor’s interpretation is that we ignore the plain reading of our city charter, and decades of precedent, to rely on a carve-out provision in the older second-class cities law.”

The ‘ole-boy network; no definition but you know it when you see it.  Patriarchy hasn’t proven to be a reliable system for leadership, only for power, arrogance, and hubris.  Before this system is legally and legislatively installed even more than it is now, We The People should at least talk about it.
