C-Span hosted conversation that included the waning baby formula supply in the USA.  8:20AM–guest—paraphrase—-Back in the 50’s mothers made their own “formula” using evaporated milk, water, and dark Karo syrup.  As one who was delighted by the appearance of a little sister in the early ’50’s, one remembers the unrelenting presence of dark Karo syrup in our kitchen.  I’ve always wondered about the reason for so much Karo syrup in our house, and that seems to answer the question.  One also remembers relentless cotton diapers hanging on the clothes line.
The caller to C-Span shared the recipe she said she found online.  She also mentioned that this recipe doesn’t include vitamins that can be secured after a discussion with a pharmacist as to those necessary.
One almost might think the extraordinary expense of raising children in 2022 has to do with industrial marketing.  Do we really need to be so complicated?
This idea runs parallel to the absurd costs paid by so many consumers for technology that may or may not be helpful, considering the expense required.
