AMERICAN COMEDY
The first discussion on C-Span today asked about the Pentagon-budget request from Biden. The first caller set the tone of comedy as this person who identified as calling from the UK where he must enjoy his nation’s 1-payer government-run health care system urge Americans to dump more money into the Pentagon due to the dangers around the world. The dry humor from this caller masks the irony and insult of the call.

The question was discussed of whether politicians and indeed cabinet members should run their stock portfolios while they passed laws and made policy for the USA. This requirement would be unnecessary if our government wasn’t corrupt, but it is. Freedom and liberty are predicated on an ability of self-control and integrity. The history of too many politicians indicate a requirement for ongoing monitoring of their actions.
With a straight face a politician opined of the problem he experienced in which (paraphrase) he came into the world with a stock portfolio, as though this was typical for all youngsters. What is one to do with this burden? Was he expected to sell his congenital stock portfolio? To differentiate between politician and comedian can be difficult, accept that the USA has recently begun censoring comedians.
A caller toward the end of the discussion with Dave Levinthal expressed the reality that currently the USA is fascist. How can this seriously be disputed? As the search goes on in the Ukraine for the Nazi’s, we needn’t look too far.

Received from US-censored comedian Lee Camp—- https://mailchi.mp/a2080bfff90a/16-arrested-as-hundreds-continue-to-blockade-manchin-fueled-coal-plant-in-west-virginia —GRANT TOWN, WV – West Virginia residents and climate change activists blockaded the coal-fired Grant Town Power Plant for several hours on Saturday to protest its role in making U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin rich and corrupt. More than 400 people took part in a rally and 16 were arrested. This action comes as the latest IPCC report paints a devastating picture of what is to come if we do not quickly move away from extractive fossil fuels and address climate change. Activists were joined by marchers from the Poor People’s Campaign’s 23 mile march through West Virginia spotlighting Sen. Manchin’s abandonment of poor and low-wealth people.–end of leecamp info–

Voices from Donbass speak to U.S. anti-war movement –On March 27, the Socialist Unity Party and Struggle-La Lucha newspaper hosted a webinar called “Stop the War Lies: Voices from Donbass.” This was a unique opportunity for the U.S. anti-war movement to hear directly from people in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), whose voices are silenced by the Western mass media’s pro-Ukraine war propaganda.–end of MRonline info–
Not to be tiresome but why stop now. As a ’70’s Feminist, to watch the jubilation among black women over the Brown-Jackson nomination touched the same joy from a bygone time as women cleared one hurdle after another. The struggle is nowhere near over, which notion is upheld by a loss of the rights of women over their own body. In one person’s opinion, racism has effectively been used by campaign strategists to divide and so weaken support for women. Confidence is a prerequisite to freedom but also demands responsibility. Trust women.https://portside.org/2022-04-09/review-daring-hope-my-life-1970s –Throughout the 1970s, the women’s liberation movement drove an active feminist presence within unions and created a network of supporters for striking women. For example, feminists forced the Trades Union Congress to take a strong stance against threats to access to abortion.–end of portside info–
Capitalism has not been healthy for too many women — http://healthjusticemonitor.org/ —Summary: “Among women of reproductive age in high-income countries, rates of death from avoidable causes, including pregnancy-related complications, are highest in the United States. U.S. women of reproductive age are significantly more likely to have problems paying their medical bills or to skip or delay needed care because of costs.” This says it all.Health and Health Care for Women of Reproductive Age

By Munira Z. Gunja et alThe maternal mortality crisis in the United States has been well documented: U.S. women have the highest rate of maternal deaths among high-income countries, while Black women are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women are. But maternal deaths and complications may be a bellwether for the U.S.’s wider failures with respect to women’s health and health care.–end of hjm info–
The privileges and rights for modern-day women means the possibility of preparation for a career or goal one chooses. For all the insult and derision from some people toward women so preparing and demanding, please imagine that the same multiplied was the case for women showing up in places where women in the ’60’s and ’70’s hadn’t previously populated in any manner. Nor had some of the women prepared for the new normal. It simply unfolded in unexpected and exuberant ways. To figure out the role to be played as unfolding, was part of the process.
The buoyancy any woman must feel to watch another woman break another glass ceiling is only mitigated by the patriarchal holdover of requiring those who have done so 50- years ago, to be shushed into modest wallpaper, as to their own achievements. The shackles of patriarchy die hard, probably due to political expediency.
Patriarchy appreciates hierarchy. One wonders if the ongoing diminishing of a woman’s rights to control her own body while glass ceilings are broken is precisely the anointing of those labeled as approved against those labeled as unapproved by patriarchy.
These issues seem complicated.
